The science of cat toys

Le Croissant

Design makes things last longer

Rethinking cat toys.

If you have ever bought a typical catnip toy, you know the cycle. Your cat is obsessed for roughly five minutes. By the next day, the toy lies abandoned on the rug.

This isn't your cat being fickle–it is a design failure. Most mass-market cat toys are made of plastic, cheap, synthetic materials, and are stuffed with stale, pulverized plant dust. Once exposed to air, the active chemical compounds evaporate almost instantly. The toy goes chemically dead before it even leaves the store shelf.

So we created Le Croissant. Based on the latest research in cognitive science, neuroscience and botany, we developed a multi-sensory toy with edible plants that release their active compounds in a controlled manner. The result is a toy that works and lasts in time. Because good design makes things last longer.

How it works

The Dual-Receptor Strategy

Standard cat toys rely entirely on a single molecule: nepetalactone, the active compound found in catnip (Nepeta cataria). However, genetic studies show that roughly 1 in 3 cats possess a genetic "blindness" to catnip. If your cat lacks the specific inherited dominant gene, standard catnip toys do absolutely nothing for them.

To overcome this biological limitation, Le Croissant deploys a dual-receptor approach combining premium Catnip buds with Silver Vine Fruit Galls (Actinidia polygama). Each herb acts on the cat's olfactory system through two distinct mechanisms.

Silver Vine contains a distinct botanical driver: nepetalactole. When your cat subjects the toy to mechanical constraints–like biting, jaw compression, or predatory bunny-kicks–this compound undergoes physical cell rupture, releasing highly potent secondary compounds: actinidine and dihydroactinidiolide. Catnip contains the nepetalactone which binds to the olfactory receptors and triggers a temporary euphoric response.

These molecules target an entirely separate set of olfactory receptors in the cat's vomeronasal organ. By pairing nepetalactone with actinidine, Le Croissant stimulates multiple neurological pathways simultaneously. The result is a product that works on over 90% of cats, even those completely unresponsive to ordinary catnip.

Neuroscience and Botanical Engineering

A controlled release mechanism

In nature, a plant stores its volatile essential oils inside microscopic, bulbous structures called trichomes, essentially tiny, fluid-filled biological balloons. When commercial manufacturers reduce catnip into fine flakes, they rupture 100% of these trichomes, exposing the oil to rapid oxidation.

Trichomes

Our engineering team solved this by using whole, uncrushed catnip buds and whole silver vine fruit galls, inserted inside the croissant.

By keeping the botanical structures completely whole, the delicate trichomes remain safely sealed inside the plant tissue during shipping and act as natural time-release capsules. It is only when your cat bites and plays with the toy that the localized mechanical pressure opens the fresh buds, releasing the naturally produced oils. As a result, the toy rejuvenates itself after every play session.

What makes it unique

Multi-Sensory Architecture

True cognitive enrichment for an indoor predator cannot rely on scent alone. Apex predators require stimulation across all five sensory inputs. We engineered the materials of Le Croissant to systematically tick every box:

SenseBiological triggerOur approach
Smell (Olfactory)Activation of the olfactory bulb via volatile organic compounds.Dual-core payload of fresh nepetalactone and actinidine essential oils.
Hearing (Auditory)High-frequency acoustic feedback resembling prey rustling in foliage.Internal layering of organic buckwheat hulls paired with coarse-cut botanical leaves, producing a crisp crunch under claw or paw.
Touch (Tactile)Friction resistance stimulating the cat's instinct to grip, snag, and shred.Outer envelope of heavyweight, premium cotton certified OEKO-TEX, with a prominent diagonal structure that provides unrivaled claw traction.
Taste (Gustatory)Licking and grooming behaviors induced by euphoria.OEKO-TEX certified cotton, guaranteeing zero heavy metals, harmful chemicals, or toxic dyes, allowing cats to safely lick the fabric surface as they self-soothe.
Sight (Visual)Shape recognition of objects in space.Ergonomic crescent shape paired with high-contrast color palettes that stand out clearly in a cat's color-vision spectrum.

Philosophy

Good Design Makes Things Last Longer

In a world dictated by planned obsolescence and cheap disposability, Ponoto offers an ethical and sustainable solution for pet toys. We believe that pet toy should follow the same rigorous standards as human toy design and engineering.

By understanding the science behind what truly triggers a cat play–how they bite to rupture plant cells, how they listen for acoustic cues, and how their claws interact with woven textiles–we created a product, Le Croissant, that actively resists degradation. Le Croissant is an investment in your home's aesthetic and a permanent upgrade to your cats' well-being.
